The word \u201cHebrew,\u201d say some scholars, is derived from the Akkadian\u00a0habiru,\u00a0<\/i>\u201cpilgrim people.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0The portrait of the ancient Hebrews that comes across in the Old Testament\u2014a nomadic people in search of both a physical and a spiritual homeland\u2014fits the etymology nicely.\u00a0\u00a0Abram leaving his city, Moses forsaking Pharaoh\u2019s palace, the exodus from Egypt, the Babylonian captivity, the return to Jerusalem:\u00a0\u00a0in story after story, the\u00a0habiru<\/i>\u00a0are on the move toward God, breaking away from complacency or narrow-mindedness when they occasionally sink into it, striving always to plunge more deeply into the divine mystery.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0They are indeed a pilgrim people.<\/p>\n
